My Trusty Baking Tools

As a baker, there are some essential tools you NEED to have in your kitchen. When I think back to my Junior Achievement class in elementary school, we learned about needs and wants, as a way to teach us about managing our finances.

So here are a list of Needs and Wants that I think will be a helpful guide if you're a newbie just starting out, or are a veteran baker and want to make sure you've got things covered!

Needs

Electric Mixer - at this point you don't need a stand mixer, but please do yourself (and your poor arm) a favor and grab a cheepo but reliable hand mixer. Amazon has great options, like this Kitchenaid

Colorant - definitely a necessity especially if you're making macarons. The Good Cooking brand has very pigmented colors and they work great when you add them to your meringue. All the colors are made in the USA with high quality FDA approved ingredients, and are Certified Kosher! Woo!

Spatula - One of the most versatile tools in the kitchen. No matter what you are baking, a spatula is always handy to scrape down your bowl, fold batter, and frost cakes. One with a metal handle is the way to go, trust me! Because wood is porous and absorbs water, it becomes weak and is more susceptible to splitting when too much pressure is applied. I've cracked a few too many wooden spatulas when making macarons - and I'm not the strongest gal out there.

Mixing Bowls - Having a variety of mixing bowls will make your life much easier when it comes to baking. Unfortunately, baking requires more steps and therefore more bowls - so it's best to have a variety of sizes so you're not using a large bowl for salt and baking soda.

Electric Food Scale - Ok, so you've gotten away with measuring flour and confectioners sugar in measuring cups and haven't really had an issue with your bakes - but let me tell you... you won't be able to get away with it when baking macarons or other intricate desserts. If you don't have the measurements to the exact gram, you risk not having a good final product - and then you just wasted 4 hours. So take my advice, and just buy the scale. You'll thank me later!

Wants

Stand Mixer - When baking becomes more of a common practice for you, rather than a once in a while thing, you should start thinking about a standing mixer. It will save you loads of time and cleanup.

Happy Baking!
